Disease cycle of southern corn rust in China. Two types of disease symptoms were observed on maize, the uredinial stage with corresponding urediniospores and the telial stage with teliospores (Crouch and Szabo 2011). The disease symptoms at the basidial, pycnial and aecial stages appearing on an alternate host are unknown. The pathogen can survive and repeat its asexual cycle by urediniospores throughout the year in south. In summer, the wind transports urediniospores from south to north where the pathogen cannot over-winter
